11+ Exams
What is the 11+?
The 11+ exams are sat by students applying to independent or grammar schools for year 7. Exams vary by school, but most assess students’ Maths, English, verbal reasoning and nonverbal reasoning skills. Some schools require additional assessments. Interviews often form the final stage of the application process.
When are the 11+ exams?
Timings vary by school, but 11+ exams are often held in the first two weeks of September of Year 6, for entry in Year 7. It’s wise to start preparing a year to 18 months beforehand.

Who administers the exams?
The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring: CEM
GL Assessment (formerly NFER): GL Assessments
The Independent Schools Examinations Board: ISEB

What does the timeline for entry typically look like?
Please note that the following timeline is a guide. It's key to research and confirm specific dates with each prospective school, as they may vary.
September, Year 5: Parents and children visit prospective schools
April-May, Year 5: Most schools open registration for 11+
June-July, Year 5: Deadline for registration
September, Year 6: 11+ exams - first two weeks of the month
October, Year 6: Most schools post results in mid-October
March, Year 6: School allocations confirmed
September, Year 7: New intake of Year 7 students begin secondary school career

What do schools look for?
Schools look for well-rounded students with the ability to work with others, but academic performance in the 11+ results is key. The 11+ is highly competitive and schools expect a standard much higher than the national average. Parents of children taking the 11+ should be aware of the level of ability required, the amount of preparation involved, and how best to maintain their child’s confidence throughout.

How we help
At LAA we know how important it is to have assured, experienced support for what can feel a daunting process. For most entrants it is their first experience of exams, managing the pressure of expectation, and being under the spotlight in an interview. Our tutors work together with parents and children to develop a programme of study tailored to the individual student, addressing challenge areas and developing strengths. Tuition with LAA goes beyond time spent within the lesson. Our tutors provide support and feedback throughout the entire process.
