GCSEs
What are the GCSEs?
GCSEs (General Certificates of Secondary Education) are the qualifications gained at 16 by most students in the UK. Assessed by coursework and exams, GCSE subjects pave the way for A level or vocational further study.

How many GCSEs should students take?
In 2019, most students sat 8 or 9 GCSEs. When deciding how many GCSEs to take, it’s worth considering a student’s academic ability, their commitments outside school and the difficulty of the curriculum. We feel balance is important: GCSEs should be challenging, not torturous.

Which subjects should students choose?
The GCSEs cover a wide range of subjects, of which Maths, English and Science are compulsory. Often students’ GCSE options are determined by what they have chosen to study running up to Year 10. We advise students to choose subjects they enjoy, as well as have an aptitude for. With future careers a consideration, it's good to opt for subjects they might like to pursue longer term.

How do we help?
Our tutors focus on building students’ confidence in their GCSE subject choices, whilst developing their ability to work and think independently.
Whilst we understand the importance of results, we believe that there is no outcome without process: final grades are the culmination of a sustained effort over two years of study. By focusing on the individual and tailoring a GCSE programme that works specifically for them, our tutors help students systematically prepare for and master their studies.
Whether it’s advising on the best subject choices for a student’s future, clarifying the curriculum and explaining core subject concepts, improving exam technique through study aids and practice papers, or developing a comprehensive but manageable revision programme, our tutors specialise in enabling GCSE students to reach their potential.
