What are the 8+ exams?

The 8+ entrance exams are used by independent schools to admit students into year 4. Exams vary by school, but most assess students’ Maths, English, and reasoning skills. An interview, group work and creative tasks often form part of the process.

When are the 8+ exams?

8+ exams are usually held in January, with entry the following September, although timelines vary from school to school.

What do schools look for?

Schools look for well-rounded students with the ability to work with others, but their main focus will be the child’s exam results. The 8+ is highly competitive, and schools expect a standard much higher than the national average. Parents of children taking the 8+ should be aware of the level of ability required, the amount of preparation involved, and how best to protect their child’s confidence.
