A Levels

What are A Levels?

A Levels are qualifications gained by students aged 18 in the UK, usually with a view to studying at university. Three or more subjects are studied for two years, with final assessment by exams, and AS level exams taken after one year.

Since 2015, AS level results have not counted towards final A Level grades, although they are often used as an indicator of expected grades. Final exams, rather than coursework or practical assessments, have become all-important, making effective revision and good exam technique vital.

How many A Levels should students take?

Most A Level students choose four subjects at AS Level, then drop one to take three in their final A Level exams. Whilst there are students who sit four or more A Levels, few universities require more than three grades. It is often better to focus on success in three subjects than be stretched and struggle to find balance.

Which subjects should students choose?

A Levels involve study at much greater depth than the GCSEs and conclude with a demanding set of exams. Students will rise to the challenge best in subjects in they are strong in, and thoroughly enjoy.

University courses may require certain A Level subjects. Medicine, for example, often needs at least two out of the core sciences, with chemistry often compulsory. For most courses, however, the subject requirements are less specific.

How can we help?

Our tutors focus on building students’ confidence in their A Level subject choices, whilst developing their ability to work and think independently.

Whilst we understand the importance of results, we believe that there is no outcome without process: final grades are the culmination of a sustained effort over two years of study. By focusing on the individual and tailoring an A Level programme that works specifically for them, our tutors help students systematically prepare for and master their studies.

Whether it’s assisting with the best subject choices for a student’s future, clarifying the curriculum and explaining core subject concepts, improving exam technique through study aids and practice papers, or developing a comprehensive but manageable revision programme, our tutors specialise in enabling A Level students to reach their potential.
